Things That Are Ahead

" Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before" (Phil. 3:13).

The ever flowing river of life has now brought us into another year. We have no way of knowing what the future holds for us in detail. We are sure to have our share of troubles and cares. But, we know that the Lord is with His people, and, where His presence is, we have no cause for worry. As we think about the things ahead, we can let it fill us with dread and fear, or we can trust Jesus and reach for the better things of life.

1. THE UNTRODDEN PATHWAY IS BEFORE US

As God told Joshua, ‘Ye have not passed this way heretofore" (Josh. 3:4). None of us have walked the path that lies ahead of us. It is a new venture. The coming days and months are all new to us. Some days may bring Joy and gladness; others may bring sadness and sorrow. As we walk the new path before us, the only way to do so is to walk with Jesus. He knows the way. He is our Captain, and He will bring us safely on our Journey.

2. THE UNCERTAINTIES OF THE TIME ARE BEFORE US

These are surely the perilous times that are spoken of in 2 Timothy 3:1. Wars are being fought in different parts of the world, and we are uncertain of the outcome. In the industrial world, there are Job uncertainties. In the home life, marriages are falling apart and homes are being broken up. As we look to our uncertain future, there is one thing we can count on. Jesus said, "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee" (Heb. 13:5). So with Him, we can face the uncertain future knowing that victory is ours through Him.

3. THE UNCHANGEABLE GOD IS WITH US

"I am the Lord, I change not" (Mal. 3:6). Yes, thank God, as we look into a path that we have never walked before and the uncertainties of the times, we do not have to do so in fear and dismay. The world is constantly changing about us - sometimes for the good, and sometimes for the bad - — but our Savior is "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, to day, and for ever (Heb. 13:8). Face the future with Him.
