"Men‘s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken" (Lucas 21:26).
Someone has said that to be forewarned is to be forearmed, and certainly that is true. If we know a bridge is out on the highway, we can take another route. Someone has also said, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." All this holds true in the spiritual aspect of life. I remember President Kennedy once asking Billy Graham, during the Cuban Crisis, where he thought history or the world was going. Rev. Graham replied, "Jesus is coming back to earth." That is what we can look for when these things come to pass.
1. THERE IS "DISTRESS OF NATIONS WITH PERPLEXITY"
These prophetic words of the Lord Jesus in Luke 21:25 were spoken two thousand years ago, but they describe the day that we live in. "Distress" means a state of danger or that which occasions suffering. It means to be under great stress and strain. The word "perplexity" means to disturb mentally, to be filled with uncertainty. It means to be backed in a corner with no way out. Yet, Jesus foresaw these awful times and forewarned us to seek refuge in Him.
THERE IS HEART DISEASE OR "HEARTS FAILING"2.
The "heart" in the Bible is often used to refer to the mind, the emotions, and the will. With all the stress brought on by trying to cope with the world situation, our mind becomes worn, our emotions become inflamed, and, at last, our will is broken. Then, worry and hopelessness begin to take their toll on the physical man, bringing high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, and even heart attacks. This is the world we live in, and there is only one place of peace and safety
- - the Lord Jesus Christ.3. THERE IS DETERMINATION
Yes, while the unsaved world is going into convulsions, with no clue of what to do, all those who are truly saved are looking for Jesus to come. He is our blessed hope, our blessed Savior, and coming King. All these things that are coming upon the earth only give us greater determination to make heaven our eternal home.
